Shearing Recap!

posted by Prairie Wind Alpacas    |   May 13, 2013 10:56

In 2 full days and 2 evenings - 20 hours total we got 30 alpacas - 12 adult males, 1 gelding, 13 females and 4 cria sheared.

But we don't just shear the alpacas, in this time we also give 86 needles, cut 240 toenails, cut 66 fighting teeth, sorted 30 fleeces,  and prepared 3 show fleeces!

Now after all that we have a herd of clean looking animals and a group of tired people!

Shearing Begins

posted by Prairie Wind Alpacas    |   May 5, 2013 11:13

Shearing has began now that it's warmer enough outside.
We got 4 animals done Friday night, doing some more Tuesday night and then 2 full days this upcoming Saturday and Sunday.
We weight each alpaca before and after shearing and on average they loss 8-10 lbs of fibre (hair) after they are sheared. Don't you wish lossing 10 lbs was as easy as getting a hair cut?!

Another successful show has come and gone! We packed up some of our animals and fleeces and headed up to Lloydminster October 14-16, 2011. It was the 10th Anniversary Show and it’s hard to believe we’ve been doing this for 7 years now! It was great to get together with all the other breeders and spend a weekend visiting and showing our animals. This year we came home with 6 ribbons - and very exciting, we won our first Grand Champion!

Thank You

Thank You to everyone who came out and supported our second annual Open House. The weather was beautiful outside and everyone, including ourselves, had a lot of fun. We love introducing people to the alpacas and the beautiful products that can be made from their fiber.

If you weren’t able to make it to our open house but would still like to come and meet our alpacas or check out our fiber products or if you have questions about alpacas give us a call or send us an e-mail and we would be happy to set up a time for you to come and check out our farm and answer all your questions.

2010 Cria

Bianca (Brith's)           Briar Rose (Pandeena's)

Rider (Rita's)

We had three cria born at our farm this year, including one born to Brith, a first time mother. It took sometime for Brith to adjust to motherhood but after a few days she adjusted quite well. The other two cria were born to Pandeena and Rita, veteran mothers. Pandeena gave birth to her cria a day after Brith gave birth to her's and Pandeena was able to help Brith with the adjustment.

Shearing 2010

posted by Prairie Wind Alpacas    |   July 23, 2010 23:05

Shearing has come and gone for another year. We had a fairly wet spring but were fortunate enough to be able to keep our animals dry during shearing. We put in a few long days but were able to get all our animals sheared by the beginning of May. Once again Jennie sheared our animals, Sarah sorted the fleece, and Don, Katie, Bob, Kathy and myself helped out wherever possible.

May 2006 - First time shearing

In May 2006 Don and Jennie took a Shearing course in Whitewood, Sask. During this two day workshop they were both taught how to shear, cut teeth and all those other fun shearing things that need to be done. The next weekend Jennie sheared all our animals for the first time

Our first animals arrive on the farm. They all seemed to adjust well but it took them a while to feel at home.
